Oval , natural edge , Spalted Hazel bowl.
This highly Spalted bowl was turned from a log of Hazel left lying on the ground after the overgrown stool was cut back , in order , to regenerate it and , bring it back into a rotation for future coppicing. I rescued it before the charcoal burner used it!
The term Spalting is used to describe the markings produced by fungal infection , which is the first stage of decay. If caught at the right stage , the markings are frozen in time , and no further degradation of the wood occurs, but one is left with stunning effects that are always exciting to find as they are always different in every piece of wood.
