Cut longitudinally from a log of Spalted Hazel, left after a stool was reduced in a managed Coppice.
Spalting occurs when wood left on damp ground , allows fungi to infect it. Sites of infection are demarcated by the black lines , a feature of Spalting , producing the attractive markings much sought after. Once dry and worked the fungi die and the wood stabilises , retaining all the many patterns of " Nature's Paintbrush"
