Spalted Hazel bowl, 18 cm W x 8 cm H.
Turned from a log taken from the stool of a coppiced Hazel tree.
Left lying on the ground , it was infected with fungi that cause wood to decay. These create boundaries at each site of infection shown as the black lines, producing the attractive markings called "spalting.
Once dry and worked the wood is stable but retains the characterful colouring.
