A slice taken at right angles across the branch of an Ash tree , which was "burred". Burrs and on Ash trees are a comparitivly rare occurrence, compared with "cankers" that are common and caused by fungal infection. A burr is formed by prolific epicormic cell growth commonly resulting from injury.
Another unusual feature in this piece is the exceptional closeness of the growth rings, indicating very slow growth, seen most easily in the central dark heart wood.
The "eyes " of the burrs and their feathering effect , plus the bark rim and colour variations make for this to be a striking organic and functional piece.
